Conservation highlights


Conducted surveys of herptiles throughout NS, and coordinated volunteers to complete the project field work. Managed/screened the online database and web site; published electronic and paper newsletters.

Consulted Park Ecologists, Government of Ontario and Stewardship Councils to create a vegetation management strategy for the Thousand Islands Ecosystem that detailed: core conservation areas, how to achieve connectivity, and recommendations for priority vegetation issues.

Carried out the CEAA Environmental Assessment process for projects along the Rideau Canal and reviewed EA’s from external proponents. Conducted surveillance at construction sites along the Canal to monitor contractor compliance with environmental mitigations.

Synthesized consultant reports and scientific literature to create biodiversity standards for agricultural areas across Canada. Researched and wrote additional standards for pollination and other processes. Co-authored the NAESI Biodiversity Tier 1 and synthesis reports for Environment Canada and Agriculture and Agri-foods Canada.

Worked with Park ecologists and communication specialists to create science-based habitat management and public education strategies to conserve the endangered Newfoundland marten in Gros Morne National Park, and Terra Nova National Park.

Developed: the operating budget and cash flow (> $100,000), standing committees with goals and terms of reference, a Director handbook, a handbook for prospective Directors, new bylaws, Board meeting agendas. Implemented: a new CMS/website and all its content, new branding, a database of conservation organizations, final edit of conference proceedings, initial planning for SAMPAA’s 7th international conference, and an online communication portal for the Board.

I deliver a range of presentations and workshops about bee conservation, and natural beekeeping, within the Halifax Regional Municipality (Nova Scotia). I also offer individual honey bee hive consulting for hobby beekeepers.
